WHO IS MICAELA TORAIN?

Micaela Torain, a native of Durham, NC, is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter, musician and poet. Known for her distinctive voice and vocal range, she fuses her love for neo-soul, jazz, and gospel to create a fresh and unique sound. Her music is also reminiscent of other genres such as indie, pop, and R&B.

Whenever she sings and plays piano, she demonstrates her wide range of musical influences. Some of her favorite artists include Mali Music, Tory Kelly, Jonathan McReynolds, Ella Fitzgerald, Lauryn Hill and Lalah Hathaway.

Micaela has known since her early years that music would be constant throughout her life. She began singing at the age of four, playing the piano at the age of six, and writing songs at the age of nine. It was during this time, she also discovered that she was a synesthete, which allows her to hear music in color. This greatly enhances her creativity and her ability to play by ear.

When she was fourteen, she began to seriously focus on songwriting during a period of depression.  This became an outlet to help her deal with the overwhelming changes of adolescence. It also allowed her to be a voice for friends facing similar challenges.

Those who hear Micaela have found her writing prowess to be lyrically and musically strong. Whether she is writing songs, poetry or prose, she utilizes imagery and internal rhyme to encapsulate her words and message. Renowned for her inspiring and uplifting lyrics, she writes to tackle complex issues that are affecting the world around her and to bring a message of hope.

Her work has allowed her to participate in the annual Domestic Violence Awareness Charity Gala, The Little Red Benefit Concert and the NCCU Gospel Explosion.

During her time at Liberty University, Micaela has been a featured soloist with The Cello Project. She was one of five students invited to attend a weekend of co-writing with professional, award-winning songwriters. She also sang a supporting role in the concert version of the Broadway musical "Amazing Grace" produced by playwriter Christopher Smith in conjunction with Liberty School of Music.

She was recently commissioned to write and release the song "Helping Hand" (words and lyrics) for the nonprofit It Takes More Than Love. This agency is nationally known for its support of grand families (relatives raising family members).

Micaela is a graduate of Durham School of the Arts, where her focus was piano and choral music. She is currently completing a degree in Artist Development at The Michael W. Smith Center for Commercial Music at Liberty University (May 2020).

An accomplished writer at her core, she is anticipating the release of her first single.
